Beijing Art Now Gallery will launch on 25 Sept, 2009 “To Be Or Not To Be”—Ye Yongqing Solo Exhibition”
Like usual exhibitions, works in this exhibition will be based upon the subject “to be or not to be” which comes from one of Ye Yongqing’s new paintings. The vagueness of “elephant” (a homonym of “looking like” in Chinese) is a reflection upon the criteria adopted in judging art. It also implies the thoughts on the idea of “mental imagery” in traditional Chinese paintings. As a contemporary Chinese artist with the most tradition humanistic care, Ye Yongqing has always been trying to employ oil painting techniques to match the brushstrokes and impressionistic quality of traditional Chinese paintings. The exhibited works were a fresh experiment in their use of imageries, appropriating human figures and still objects in ancient paintings, displaying in dialogues different works, and thus constructing an exhibition framework that looks like an essay, which shows a literary thinking of visual culture and presents to the viewer a world for enjoyment and appreciation in every detail of it.
